Artist Introduction
Alfie Caine (b.1996) is a British artist who lives and works in Rye, East Sussex.
Caine’s paintings present a fantastical but tangible experience of everyday environments, merging residential scenes with natural landscapes to create dream-like spaces tinged with familiarity. Inspired by the architectural and design concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (a total work of art), Caine conjures up complete residential scenes: drawing from his imagination everything from the building’s architecture down to the minute details of floor tiles, ceramics and cutlery.
Caine often takes a singular experience as an anchor for each of his works. The landscapes and atmosphere of Rye permeate many of his works; after spending several formative months completing a residency programme for Bridge Point Creative Arts Centre, the environment proved so stimulating for his work that he now lives and works there permanently.
Caine’s background in architecture is evident in the painstaking attention to detail paid to every aspect of his work. He draws from a series of detailed preliminary sketches to construct the composition and refine shapes and colours. In a nod to the designers whose work he has collected or admires, Caine’s works often incorporates iconic design objects.
The former Cambridge architecture student graduated in 2018. He received multiple prizes for his work including the Purcell Prize for exceptional drawing and representational ability and the Schuldham Plate; his college’s highest academic accolade. In 2018 Caine’s work was selected to be displayed in the ‘Fresh Perspectives’ exhibition at RIBA.
